Do surnames alone count?
Yes — Picasso, Monet, Rembrandt, and Vermeer all score on their own. So does 'Van Gogh' in full.
Are sculptors and architects included?
Only the household-name artists: Michelangelo, Donatello, and Rodin stay because everyone knows them as 'artists'. Architects and photographers are deliberately excluded.
What's the best strategy?
Go century by century: the 1500s (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian), the 1600s (Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velázquez, Rubens, Caravaggio), the 1800s (Goya, Turner, the Impressionists), then the moderns and the street artists.
