# Theme poster image credits

Poster images for the homepage challenge picker (`/themes/<slug>.jpg`).
Most images are the lead image of the English Wikipedia article listed below,
fetched as a 800px+ thumbnail via the MediaWiki pageimages API; themes whose
subject has no free lead image (Pokémon, fictional women, video games, anime
characters, bands, TV shows, superheroes, animals) use a freely licensed photo
found via Wikimedia Commons search instead — for those, the third column links
the Commons file description page. All files are recompressed and center-cropped
to 513×640 locally with sips. See each linked page for the original author and
license.

Re-fetched and re-themed 2026-08-06: every theme poster now shows the most
iconic subject of its category instead of the generic parent-article lead
image. Non-free material (movie posters, album covers, official game/anime
artwork) is never used; character themes show freely licensed cosplay, parade,
or statue photos. If an article's lead image changes upstream, re-run the same
API call to refresh.

2026-08-05 batch (tools/build_themes4.py): eight new cards — dinosaurs through
horror-movies above. Horror Movies has no free key art (posters are non-free),
so it uses a freely licensed (FAL) dark-cinema ambiance photo, like the other
character/theme exceptions; planets.jpg stays small (~46KB) because Saturn on
black compresses trivially even at q99.

2026-08-06 batch (tools/build_themes5.py): twelve new cards — rivers through
us-cities above. Phobias uses a freely licensed jumping-spider macro (movie
still-style spider art would be non-free); athletes uses the CC BY 2.0 Usain
Bolt finish photo; girl-groups.jpg stays small (~57KB) because the BLACKPINK
pink-carpet shot compresses well, same as planets.jpg in batch 4.
